What do you do in your role?

As Kaitiaki for Tamariki Ora I receive referrals from a variety of avenues and enrol pepi and mama in to our Turangi based service. In doing this I work closely with a range of staff and services based at Awhi House to support our whanau.

Often I accompany and assist our registered nurses with home visits for Tamariki Ora, and I contribute to the planning and running of events.

I also organise and facilitate hapu mama wananga in Turangi and Taupo. These are opportunities to share korero around perinatal care, smoking cessation, immunisation, breast feeding and safe sleep. The overall aim is to reduce the incidence of SUDI.

What do you like about your role?

I enjoy building relationship with whanau in our community and being able to support them in any way that I can.  Sometimes the help is connecting whanau to the wider community networks and other support services and other times it’s just about having a korero.
I love that our priority is always about the pepi, but also understand that whanau require our support.  As such, I enjoy empowering parents to be active in the wellbeing of their pepi.

How long have you been with Tuwharetoa Health?

I started in October 2020

What made you choose to work in hauora?

I chose to work in hauora because it gave me the ability to help make a difference in people’s lives. I like supporting others and being a part of a dynamic and growing industry. Working here also means that I can assist to meet the needs of our growing Maori population.
