What do you do in your role?
I support whanau of all ages to change personal habits and attitudes to improve health and wellbeing and lessen the burden of disease.
Whanau can self-refer or may be referred by the GP for a variety of conditions including mental health conditions and long-term conditions (i.e. diabetes, heart disease, and lung disease).
Together we develop pathways of positive change and address the behaviours that are impacting on their health and wellbeing. This might include drug and alcohol challenges, smoking, medication non-adherence, and/or pain management.
I then offer day to day support to guide and empower whanau on this journey.
What do you like about your role?
I like being attuned with the individual and hearing their journey on where they are today and how I can be a part of making that plan and that change with them.
How long have you been with Tuwharetoa Health?
I started with Tuwharetoa Health at the end of March 2021 as a Whanau Ora Tiwhana, but have been in this HIP position since September 21.
What made you choose to work in hauora?
I was very passionate about supporting our people and decided that a career in Counselling was one way of achieving that. In 2019 I gained my Bachelor’s degree in Counselling.
My motivation to work for Tuwharetoa Health was driven by my desire to return home and use the qualification and skills that I had gained for the benefit of our own people.
