What do you do in your role?
In my role as a home base community kaimahi, I see to the needs of people who utilize our services. My role mainly is to help our people with certain tasks that they can’t do for themselves, this can be very diverse including personal cares, home help, complex needs whatever it is according to their care plans. Also, it gives someone to korero with. It also involves people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds. In my role I like to include the four dimensions of Te Whare Tapa Wha to support them through their healing process – Taha Tinana (Physical Wellbeing), Taha Wairua (Spiritual wellbeing), Taha Whanau (Family and Social wellbeing) and Taha Hinengaro (Mental and Emotional wellbeing). To utilize our services, they need a referral from their general practitioner, to receive help in their own homes.
What do you like about your role?
I enjoy the smile on their faces when their needs are met. I like the diversity of supporting people and knowing that I have made a difference to them, their whanau, growth and development. Another great satisfaction about my role is you have that connection with extended whanau knowing their loved ones are being taken care of.
